The Top Five Albums of 2007

Note: Please list your top five in the comments section. Listing 1-5 without any commentary is just fine. There are about 20 different songs you can download within this list and a few other songs you can stream. Enjoy!

Update: Stereogum has published their Top 50.

The Year in Music 2007

2007 is just about over and I am still trying to catch up with all the music my ears have been exposed to over the past 11+ months. KEXP continues to be a source of music for me, but less so than in years past. Sirius Radio’s Left of Center and Underground Garage have probably introduced me to more good records than any other source. There were some very informative blogs that also kept me up to date including Stereogum, I Am Fuel You Are Friends, Paste Magazine Blog, The Hype Machine, and Pop Candy.

I took my daughter to Bumbershoot this year to rock out to Kings of Leon and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, both of who had stellar albums come out this year. Kylee says BRMC is her favorite band.

Band of Horses released another good record, Cease To Begin, but I am still waiting for the moment they allow me to forget about My Morning Jacket and The Shins. Marry Song is the best Shins song the Shins didn’t release this year. I know the BOH will eventually make a masterpiece of a record that doesn’t necessarily flaunt their indie influence (click here to download some tracks).

Speaking of the Shins, Wincing the Nigh Away was their third straight solid record. They even waded into Beta Band territory on Sea Legs (free download here).

I enjoyed some great folk records this year from Devandra Barnhardt (download the sprawling Seahorse here), Iron and Wine, Jose Gonzales (download Down the Line here), and (surprisingly) Eddie Vedder. I am a huge PJ fan obviously, but I have always preferred the harder stuff as opposed to the crooning from Eddie. From what I am told the music fits nice in the Sean Penn movie Into the Wild.

Bright Eyes and Ryan Adams both released records that showcased some old-school country/western boogie. I seriously think Ryan Adams should just do a Grateful Dead covers tour because the Cardinals do the best Dead homage that I have heard in a while. Oh yeah, if you are a Deadhead tune into Channel 32 on Sirius Radio. You will spin and smile for hours and hours.

I loved the fact that the Boss and John Fogerty both released records within days of each other that felt “classic”. Fogerty finally released an album that embraced his Credence roots (listen to I can’t Take it No More) and Bruce Springsteen revved up the tempo for the first time in a while (download Radio Nowhere for free, it’s a three-minute rock blast).

Admittedly I am biased here, but the new Half Acre Day album stayed in my iPod for many months. 14 Trips Around the Sun is a big improvement from the band’s last release because although you still get the idea there are multiple song writers, all the songs are about the end of the world. Yes, it's a concept album, remember those? Coincidentally they are streaming what I consider to be the best four songs on the album (BIOTA, Brown, Anemones, and Turning Into Stars) on MySpace right now.

Other highlights from 2007:

Best garage rock record? The Black Lips. Easily. What other band could make a sing along about a hurricane (O Katrina)? Need an acoustic Sonic Youth record? Thurston Moore provided that too. Like whistling? Peter, Bjorn, and John made a record you could whistle along to with ease (download Young Folks).

The Beastie Boys released a decent 70’s wah-wah funky instrumental record. Rogue Wave made a record that reminded me of early Death Cab for Cutie (download Lake Michigan).

The 1990’s made a really good disco-rock album, not shockingly since they were “discovered” by Franz Ferdinand. You Made Me Like It, the album’s opening track with an uber-catchy disco riff could make even the most stubborn man put one some dancing shoes.

How can I forget Spoon? Oh how I love these guys. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was the sixth best record of the year, just missing out on the top five. Has a band ever sounded so big by sounding so small? The Underdog was one of the best songs of the year. The horns rule. Watch them play it on Letterman.

The Top Albums of 2007

5. Arcade Fire Neon Bible

I have to be honest and say I didn’t even think this would be in my top 20 until about three weeks ago. I threw it on my iPod again and have since discovered many new layers I didn’t even know were there. Keep The Car Running is my favorite track, but Intervention also makes me want to sing along. Is it kosher to claim a band as an inspiration, almost as if listening to their music is sermon-like? The lyrics are occasionally dark, but there always seems to be an out clause or a way to escape bad times. Hope.

4. White Stripes Icky Thump

I think I will pretty much reserve a space in my Top Five every time Jack and Meg White release an album. As I wrote earlier this year on the blog, I am pretty much convinced The White Stripes are the best thing to happen to rock since Led Zeppelin. They can do blues, country, bluegrass, lounge, pop, punk, hard rock, and heavy metal as good as anyone while at the same making it all their own. They don’t imitate, they borrow and steal ingredients and always end up sounding like the White Stripes. The best songs on Icky Thump are the boogey-woogie Rag and Bone and the steel guitar filled Catch Hell Blues.

3. Radiohead In Rainbows

Did you download this already? If not, you have two more days at Radiohead’s home page. Did I mention you could pay whatever price you want? Seriously. I paid four lbs and it’s easily worth it. While better musically than Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows does not, as some have suggested, return Radiohead to their Bends or OK Computer days. The songs are still filled with enough sound effects and loops to make any Kid A fan turn their headphones up to 11. In Rainbows does shift gears radically from one song to the next, but at the same time listened to as a whole still feels like one product. Or, as we used to call them, one thematically planned album. Bodysnatchers is the most rockin number and All I Need is, unusual for Radiohead, a straightforward love song. If you like Radiohead you will love this album.

2. The National Boxer

I did not discover The National until this year so to me Boxer is like their debut album. They combine the simplicity of a quiet Interpol with the importance of Bruce Springsteen to create a folk/rock sound that is undeniably unique. The slower Fake Empire and Start a War prove the band has something to say, while Apartment Story proves they can rock out. You can download an entire concert here (thanks to I Am Fuel You Are Friends) and listen for yourself. Such a pleasant surprise!

1. LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver

I listened to Sound of Silver probably more than twice as much as any record this year, partly because the free remix album is almost as good as the original. All of My Friends was my favorite song of the year. (The Franz Ferdinand cover is pretty damn good too). North American Scum is another one you should download if you don’t have the album already.

It’s not often an artist can combine punk, funk, disco, and rock (sometimes within the same song) and still create something both listenable and danceable. But that’s exactly what James Murphey has done on his second full length record. This album sounds great in the car, great in a club, great in the gym, and it’s especially good for running Greenlake in Seattle. Best. Album. Of. 2007. Ever.

I tried to post on the blog itself, but it wasn't working for me. I haven't gotten to much music this year, but I would like to tell you what MY top 5 albums of the year are, if you're interested.

5. The Hairspray Soundtrack
Don't judge me.
4. Of Montreal: Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
That's right, I liked it. A lot.
3. Lily Allen: Alright, Still
This walks the line between 2006/2007, but it still has kept me going all year.
2. Iron & Wine: The Shepherd's Dog
I count myself in the proud few that are completely enjoying the evolution of Sam Bean's sound.
1. Tegan & Sara: The Con
I bought this one sort of on a whim, liking the title track. Turns out every note sounds new and exciting to me, like a band I should have known about for my whole life.

Anyway TK, that's how I roll.

Holy cow, just looked through my iTunes at albums from 2007, there was so much great music put out this past year, it's going to be hard to choose, so forgive me if I have to add a few at the end that need mentioning.

Also really enjoyed - Band of Horses (Cease to Begin), Wilco (Sky Blue Sky), Son Volt (The Search), The Good the Bad and the Queen (self titled), Eddie Vedder (Into the Wild), Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (Some Loud Thunder)

Sorry, here's the Top 5

5. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away - Sleeping Lessons probably my favorite song of the year.
4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - Fantizzle
3. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank - Another in a long line of great albums. They continue to evolve.
2. The Mother Hips - Kiss the Crystal Flake - Never heard the Hips? Check them out, you won't be disappointed.
1. Radiohead - In Rainbows - Ever since I downloaded it, every time I listen to other albums I think to myself "why aren't I listening to Radiohead right now?"

I had to group nos. 1 and 3 together, so a rather disorganized list:

3. Acrcade Fire: Neon Bible
1. LCD Soundsystem Sound of Silver
Saw concert with both of these at the U--they were both great.
So cool that Arcade Fire guy and wife played with Springsteen.

2. WILCO: Sky Blue Sky

4. Porcupine Tree: Fear of a Blank Planet
My husband and teenage son played this album for months--it grew circles through and around my brain, and eventually became an addiction.
Kind of like a cross between Radio Head and System of a Down, if that makes any sense. I could be off on that.

5. Northern State--Can I Keep This Pen?

NS is a trio of three women in their 20s, who mostly rap, but are singing more, esp on this album. One of the beastie boys produced this album, and I can see why--some of NS'songs on their earlier two albums like sound like they are female Beasties. Not many people know of NS, but they're gaining some recognition-- a review in EW (A-) and their songs were on Gray's Anatomy and the spin off.

Last year, I e'd a comment to them on their web site, and one of NS wrote back (Sprout), and we struck up a correspondence. I met her two weeks ago at their concert with Tegan and Sara. My daughter and I worked merch for them for a bit. It was fun to be involved. (I'm amazed she kept up the correspondence, instead of being wary of my being a psycho fan! (I would have. You know, stranger danger and all!)

This list is always easy for me, since I only purchase 5 or 6 albums a year anyway. Here's what I bought in '07:

5. Band of Horses - Cease to Begin
This was on the bubble, but in my mind any album with a track called "Detlef Schrempf" gets a bonus.

4. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Liked the album and the title.

3. The Good, The Bad, and The Queen - The Good, The Bad, and The Queen
Again, nice title.

2. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
Again,... just kidding. Loved the new sounds coming from the latest Shins.

1. Peter, Bjorn, and John - Writer's Block
I love every song on this album. Whistling is the new cowbell.

Honorable mention: Vampire Weekend, Fujiya and Miyagi, Flight of the Conchords

Kara B....

Well, I thought a girl should chime in on this list. So here you go:

5. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
4. Data Rock - Datarock
3. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
2. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (I love the sound Johnny Marr adds to this album - and they put on a GREAT show together)
1. U2 - The Joshua Tree Remastered for the 20th anniversary (Although not a "new" album technically speaking it is tougher to find a better album ever!! Some of my favorite U2 songs are also included on the corresponding b-sides disc - Rise Up, Luminous Times, and others).

Hi Folks! I didn't consume nearly as much music in '07 as I have in the past. In a way, it makes the personal best-of list easier to assemble.

Top 5:
SPOON - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
JAY-Z - American Gangster
HALF ACRE DAY - Fourteen Trips Around the Sun
RADIOHEAD - In Rainbows
MENOMENA - Friend and Foe

Next 5:
SPEAKER SPEAKER - We Won't March EP
ELLIOTT SMITH - New Moon
THE LONELY FOREST - Nuclear Winter
BISHOP ALLEN - The Broken String
JOSE GONZALEZ - In Our Nature

OK, if I have to pick five, here goes. In no particular order:

The New Pornographers "Challengers"
While it didn't grab me right away, it keeps getting better on every listen.

Sloan "Never Hear the End of It"
This might have been on my list last year, since it came out in Canada in 2006, but the US release wasn't until 2007. I think it's their best since "One Chord To Another"

Jason Anderson "Tonight"
He sounds like he's channeling Bruce Springsteen, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Marnie Stern "In Advance of the Broken Arm"
Amazing guitar work.

Art Brut "It's A Bit Complicated"
I ended up liking this album a lot more than I thought I would. But God help me, the lead singer looks like Neville Longbottom.

My mostly complete list is on my blog

Thanks everyone for writing up your lists. I just checked out John's blog and he has some good bands on there that deserve a second mention including Clinic, !!!,Art Brut,Rosebuds, and Of Montreal.
I'd also like to add that the new New Pornographer's album has grown on me as well. There first release is one of my favorite albums ever, and they continue to make great music, albeit a bit mellower than the other records.
Great blog and show John!

Must Apologise Immediately. after waking up this morning, head pounding from the New Years revelry, i read the post i made on top five albums and felt a little stupid. please excuse the swearing and the smack talk. Its not my fault, its alcohol and The Wu Tang Clans. I was listening to their new album and thought it might be funny to write my top five as if The RZA was sitting next to me. obviously it was one of those "you had to be there" moments. apologies, apologies, apologies.
