Here's his timeline...I'll denote when the Desmond is (F)uture Desmond/2004 to the past, (U)naffected/Unknown Affect Desmond, and (P)ast Desmond/1990s to the future.

Timeline -

1989 - Desmond begins dating Ruth (U) ("Catch-22")

1995 - A week before marrying Ruth, Desmond gets drunk and is found by Brother Campbell. Desmond joins the monastery, and is expelled...meets Penelope Widmore. (U) ("Catch-22") (Note: Brother Campbell has a photo of himself with Mrs. Hawking)

1996 - Desmond asks Charles Widmore to marry Penelope, who refuses. He meets Charlie playing on a street corner, and decides to break up with Penny. (U)

- Desmond returns to 1996 because of the implosion, and decides to change the past, but ultimately, Penelope throws the ring into the Thames. (F) ("It Flashes Before Your Eyes")

- Desmond interacts with Daniel Faraday at Queens College Oxford, becoming Faraday's constant. ("The Constant")(P)

- Desmond tells Penny to expect a call on Christmas Eve 2004, and gets her number to cement Penny as Desmond's constant. (P) ("The Constant")

1996 (circa) - 1999 - Desmond completes his prison sentence and is discharged from the military. Charles Widmore immediately attempts to bribe Desmond to 'run away and forget Penny'. (U) ("Live Together, Die Alone")

2001 - Desmond meets Libby at a coffee shop, shortly after arriving in the US, Los Angeles. She loans him her boat to enter a one man race around the world. (U) ("Live Together, Die Alone")

- Penelope tracks Desmond down to the stadium where he and Jack meet for the first time, and confronts him. (U) ("Live Together, Die Alone")

- Desmond begins the boat race in Libby's boat. (U) ("Live Together, Die Alone")

- Desmond arrives on the island and begins to push the button (U) ("Live Together, Die Alone")

2004 - After accidentally killing Kelvin, Desmond causes the system failure that brings the plane to the island (U) ("Live Together, Die Alone")

During the period between the crash and November 1st, 2004 Desmond is assumed to be sitting in the magnetic anomaly, pushing the button.

The rest of the Des eps should be taken as read.

ok ok, I've been racking my brain and I figured out why Daniel read "Desmond is my constant". When Daniel arrived on the island he did not know the correct coordinates (21.whatever and the 11 that he told Desmond to tell him in the past). When Desmond went to the past and told Daniel, it helped the past Daniel unlock his own puzzle and only "then" did Daniel put "Desmond is my constant" in his journal.

SO when Daniel read his journal at the end that entry was brand new to him. ALAS changing the future is possible unlike what he said in the past.

This is a small piece of what is going on but that is my belief on what he read. I'll get further in depth on your timeline tomorrow at a decent hour. Stay tuned.

Couldn't sleep. This time travel is starting to reveal some questions to the island (or expose). Ben right hand man "an other" (the dark haired, dark featured guy) had not aged in many years. Also Jack said a day had gone by when he phoned the boat looking for his friends (20 min helicopter ride). It leads me to believe the island is stuck in time or timeless.

I'd be willing to bet the "future Jack" and the others who were rescued were only presumed to be gone for a day or week by the outside world.

This also explains Walt growing once off the island b/c he's back in real time compared to the island.

There's still a lot to be answered but hopefully this spurns some thought??

Also, kind of obvious maybe, but when the tied up guys said it looks like you have a friend on the boat, b/c the door was opened for Desmond and Sayid, that was Ben's "inside man".

I LOVED the episode last night. I am so intrigued by the time travel aspect of the show. I don't think it is really time travel in a conventional sense, though. I think it is all about mind, conscience, and perception. I think they really have been gone for 90+ days on the island because the true date on the boat is 12/24/2004. Also, Ben told Jack who wone the World Series and showed him the clip of the end of the series. I am interested in the Walt piece and that dark haired Other guy. I didn't even think about them in regards to time travel. I love this show!

I felt that last night's show had lots of answers and progress (along with new huge questions). The timeline is good. I had forgotten that Des has left that other woman before Penny. Cale and I could not figure out who that new guy was until he said who he was to Desmond.

I also think that Ben is involved in the time travel aspect, and that is why he is so powerful. I think he must change the future and the past to benefit himself and ruin the lives of other people. The good think is that these horrible flash forwards will not necessarily actually happen?!?

I could not go to sleep last night after watching. LOST is a mind whirler!

You forgot one crucial thing that I've been pondering since the episode aired. The writers messed up. Des talked to Penny before he left for the boat race when he first met jack. This voids the phone call idea eight years later...
