I have not looked this up yet, but I believe the guy who played Ben's dad on Lost last night was Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite. The giveaway was when you could see Ben's dad eating steak during his breaks from Videotaped football tossing practice.
By the way, LOST is once again my favorite show. The last few episodes, to qoute my idol Ferris Bueller, have been choice.

Arcade Fire at Coachella

The big day is finally approaching. The little big horse has been training very forwardly in recent weeks and is now ready to make is his season debut. The plan is to enter him on Thursday for a race on
Sat. It is a Maiden claiming race going 5 1/2 furlongs with a
claiming price of $17,500. He has trained so well that me and my staff feel the price hike is justified (we ran for $12,500 last year in case you've forgotten). Also, the winner of his race last year, A Touch of Malice, has already won an allowance race impressively this season. So we'll take our shot on Saturday and see how he's progressed from two to three. Leslie Mawing will once again be in
he saddle and it promises to be a fun day.

Lost has an end date!

Working on the cabin

As most of you know, the wind storm caused some major damage to the cabin. The deck was destroyed and half of the roof needs to be replaced. As part of the Phase 1 construction work, the deck is the first item on the agenda to be (almost) completed. Dormers will be added to the upstairs loft to allow for a large increase in usable space and the roof will be re-insulated and shingled. Saturday we spent eight hours clearing the three combined lots and we chipped a couple dump truck loads full of trees and branches. Lots of work left to do, but we are making progress. The picture below is a Photomerge of four pictures on the south end of the deck.

A Nice Review of LCD Soundsystem From Coachella

Best of the fest: LCD Soundsystem, by far. The current six-person touring lineup is the most bloodthirsty live band around, with the guitarist from Hot Chip and the drummer from The Juan McLean propelling “All My Friends” and “North American Scum” far past their already-mindblowing studio versions. Best show I’ve seen all year, besides the one they did last month at New York’s Bowery Ballroom. They had Coachella’s happiest crowd too, gyrating in the Sahara Tent under a giant mirror ball. I can’t think of another band I would say this about, but if I took somebody to this gig and they didn’t have the best time of their life, I would assume they were profoundly f'd in the head.

I couldn't agree more in regards to the state of 24. I actually stopped watching after about the sixth episode. I finally couldn't take the needless and over-the-top torture scenes and plot twists. I hope they can arrive at a reasonable plan to freshen it up because up until this year I had not missed an episode.

The greatest threat Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland, pictured) has ever faced may be viewer ennui. According to the Los Angeles Times, 24's producers are feeling the sting of criticism and defection of viewers over the ho-hum plot twists of Day 6 (count me among those fans not feeling this season, especially in contrast to the gripping Day 5), and they're promising big changes next year. "This year could be seen to be the last iteration of it in its current state," writer/executive producer Howard Gordon says ominously.

How radical will next season's changes be? Maybe not that radical; "It won't be a musical or a half-hour," Gordon tells the Times. Also, Jack won't be undergoing any major career changes; as Gordon puts it, Bauer "won't be flipping burgers."

Actually, I'd kind of like to see Jack flipping burgers. "You have five seconds to tell me the secret sauce recipe, or I'm going to put your face in the fryolator." Seriously, Gordon & Co. need to do something different, not just because longtime fans are finding 24's current storytelling predictable and stale, but also because (as the article notes) it's not 2002 anymore, and American viewers are increasingly skeptical of 24's terror-threat scenarios, just as they are of the government's efforts to sell a real-life War on Terror. So let's have it, PopWatchers? What challenges should Jack Bauer face on Day 7? What would 24 have to do to become must-watch Monday-night viewing again?
