Obama declares he's running for president

Rep. Rohrabacher: Global Warming May Have Been Caused By ‘Dinosaur Flatulence’

This week, Congress held its first hearing on the landmark IPCC report on climate change. That report concluded that global warming is “unequivocal” and human activity is the main driver, “very likely” causing most of the rise in temperatures since 1950.

During the hearing, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) — one of the 87 percent of congressional Republicans who do not believe in man-made global warming — questioned the authors of the report about a period of dramatic climate change that occured 55 million years ago. “We don’t know what those other cycles were caused by in the past. Could be dinosaur flatulence, you know, or who knows?’

Grandfather fights 16-foot snake to free grandson

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- A 66-year-old man saved his grandson from the grip of a 16-foot-long (5 meter) anaconda by beating the snake with rocks and a knife for half an hour, authorities said Thursday.

"When I saw the snake wrapped around my grandson's neck I thought it was going to kill him," Joaquim Pereira told Brazil's Agencia Estado news service. "It was agonizing, I pulled it from one side, but it would come back on the other."

Pereira's 8-year-old grandson, Mateus, was attacked by the anaconda while wandering near a creek on his grandfather's ranch in the city of Cosmorama, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) northwest of Sao Paulo.

While the boy was playing with friends, the snake attacked and wrapped itself around him, police officer Hudson Augusto said. Anacondas are not poisonous, but kill their prey by coiling around them and squeezing until victims suffocate.

"It brought me to the ground and bit me," the boy told Globo TV. "Then it started crawling up my neck and began suffocating me."

Mateus' friends ran to get his grandfather, who reached the scene and battled with the snake until he had hurt it so badly that it let go of his grandson.

Mateus had to be rushed to a hospital and needed 21 stitches on his chest where he was bitten. He was later released.

Globo TV showed footage of the dead snake, which weighed about 77 pounds (35 kilograms). Police said anacondas are not uncommon in the region where the attack occurred, but attacks on people are rare.

This just in from the Department of Never Gonna Happen: Brooklyn-based state senator Charles Kruger has proposed a ban on iPods, cell phones, and the like while crossing streets of NYC and Buffalo, N.Y. He wants to do this because a 23-year-old in his district was struck and killed last month while listening to his iPod. That is seriously sad. I feel for this person, especially because I've almost been him a bunch of times now. Like probably a lot of you, I relentlessly offer my precious life on a rubber-encased silver platter to drivers who also aren't paying attention on a near-daily basis so that I can better surround-sound myself in "Dangerous Type" by The Cars. (Do you like what I did there? Not really? Okay.) But COME ON, Sen. Kruger. Pedestrians, and drivers, and you, are the stupid ones. Not iPods! Obliviously rocking out on the street is one of our nation's proudest and most exhilarating pastimes, as evidenced by that girl in the photo, who may or may not be me. Nice "Sonic"-colored iSkin, ambiguous girl in the photo. You're cool.

Now, clearly, no one is going to listen to this silly senator. But what if — in a wacky alternate universe where idiots always get their way, which wouldn't actually be too far off from this one — they did? What a buzzkill! Would it be worth it to wake up in the morning? (Yes, I know, this is when you slam me because I should be happy for the opportunity to wake up in the morning — and you're right! But still, let me know what you think.)

I feel really bad for this mother. She obviously loves her son, but at the same time she is happy for him too. A must-read.

Qoute of the Day: Name the Movie

You know that Julie chick? Loves you. You want her? Gotta play it cool, you know. You can't let her know how much you like ?cause if she knows, she'll dump you like that. Believe me. Like, if she asks you if you want a ride, you say, "No, I've got my own ride, but maybe I'll see you later." Sounds stupid, doesn't it? It works.

Vista Launches...Gates interview.

The richest man in the world seems a bit touchy in regards to Apple doesn't he? Sorry about the Zune dude. Sorry your new features in Vista were in the APPLE OS a couple of years ago.

P.S. To my Microsoft friends: You all rock! I just thought Gates was a tad bitter...

Coldplay: From EW today

I thought this was pretty damn funny. I also used to love Coldplay. We saw their first stateside show. They played a great show with Grandadddy a few months later. Rachelle and I listened to Yellow and Don't Panic on repeat for about five months. Their second album was better than their first. Then their live shows turned into the "Chris Martin on piano show" (lame) and their next album was terrible. It's a remake of their second album.

Did they forget that they used to rock, if only slightly? If I was Coldplay I would put away the piano for a little while and concentrate on touring, singing, and playing as the next U2 instead of the next Billy Joel plus backing band. Or, play as if you have something to prove, because you do.

Coldplay_l When I read about Coldplay's plan to release The Singles 1999-2006—on 7-inch vinyl, no less—I thought, Ugh. Lame. A greatest hits set already? You've made only three albums. You're not U2. Booooo.

What's up with that? Not the new release—they did have a few EPs out before Parachutes, and at least the compilation won't include the words "Greatest" or "Hits,"—but my reaction. I am a former Coldplay obsessive who now goes around calling them lame. I am lame. Right this second, with "Amsterdam" beaming directly into my ears and me loving it just as much as I used to, I feel like a traitor. But I know I'm not alone. So what happened? Ooh, multiple choice.

When did it become uncool to like Coldplay?
A. When we realized most of the songs on X&Y sounded the same and not so great
B. As soon as promos from The 40-Year-Old Virgin came out ("You know how I know you're gay? You like Coldplay.")
C. It's Yoko's Gwyneth's fault
D. Bands that care too much about human suffering on a global scale are annoying
E. Never, fool!
