One of the scariest things I've ever seen
My viewpoint.
I was sitting in the Diamond Club tonight six rows directly behind home plate and I will never forget the look on Soriano's face right before he fell to the ground. His face was saying "what the hell just happened to me" and that was it. Ground. A line drive to the head is obviously not good regardless of who's hitting, but Vladi Guerrero hits the ball harder than anyone in the league. Unreal.
I actually screamed out "Oh My God" along with a bunch of other fans right when we heard the sound of the ball hitting his head. It was seriously just as loud as the ball hitting the bat a split second beforehand. Then it was eerily quiet for almost ten minutes as they carried him off on a stretcher and then drove him off the field to the ambulance. I'll truly will never forget it and we are obviously hoping for the best.

Is the Bar Closed will run NOT September 7th
Is the Bar Closed will NOT run Sept 7th as planned. It now looks as if he will run the following week at Emerald Downs.
We are very excited to announce Is the Bar Closed will run September 7th at Emerald Downs.
For those who do not know, last fall Rachelle and I purchased a horse with a group of friends and through the tutalage of superstar trainer Grant Forster this horse will one day dominate the local racing scene (or so we hope). If nothing else we will have a grand time rooting for him.
Please join us at Emerald Downs on the 7th if you can make it. If you have never been to the track before this would be a great first-time experience. As you all know, everyone remembers their first time. As with most first times this race will be short...because it's Is the Bar Closed's first time racing and as a two-year old they start off at short distances first.

I watched a young singer/songwriter by the name of M. Ward last night on Letterman and he sounded brilliant. He kind of has that old country/folk sound that reminds me of the "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" Bright Eyes record and some of the mellower My Morning Jacket songs. (For anyone who knows that Bright Eyes record it is indeed Jim James of MMJ singing back up on the first song. I digress) Anway, I feel like I was suppose to see this guy because earlier in the day I was listening to our new Sirius radio in the car and M. Ward had a song featured that I enjoyed.

What a last week of vacation!!!
Well, summer is over for me as of today, but I feel like I went out with a bang. Thanks to all of you who made summer possible. Specifically I would like to thank all of you who don't believe in Global Warming is actually happening. My consistent tan would disagree with you.
I am exhausted right now but I was wondering if anyone was more active this week?
Here is what I accomplished:
I played hard-core hoops three days.
Ran the lake hard-core four days.
One day of hard-core wakeboarding.
One day of hard-core intertubing.
One day of hard-core kite boarding lessons. Great sport. Can't wait for lesson two.
Sold a car.
Bought a car.
Jammed on the guitar hard-core.
Had a hard-core breakfast with Grandma and family.
Babysat Dane. Totally hard-core.
Watched nine episodes of Greys Anatomy and six episodes of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Semi hard-core.
Hard-core On Demand.

Waterfront Tunnel a better long-term solution
I like this study because it went beyond the immediate effects and costs of a tunnel and focused instead on Seattle's future. I would have accepted an opposite outcome gracefully, but the results prove what I have saying along: in the long-term this is the best solution for everyone.
Of course the tunnel would cost more money and as of right now there isn't a sure fire way to raise the funds without and large increase in taxes. But wouldn't you rather have something done right as opposed to a quick and cheaper fix?
Driving south down I-5 on Saturday reminded me of the short sightedness of Seattle's urban planning. Lets see, get on at 85th and get over to the left lane like you are supposed to do when you want to go fast. Then you need to get over to the far right lane because 65th traffic gets on the freeway from the left and slows traffic down. But you can't stay there too long because drivers from 50th and 45th need to get on to, so you move to the left. However, you can't stay there for too long because the exit for 520 slows traffic there, so you move to the right. This also helps you avoid the traffic from 520 attempting to merge onto south I-5. But if there is any type of event in Seattle you are screwed because the Mercer St exit will be backed up on the right, so you again move left. But you can't stay there either because Mercer St traffic merges onto I-5 from the left so you need to move right again. It's insane and this is just one example of poor long-term planning. This lack of vision costs of all us time and money every day. And isn't money what worries everyone about this tunnel?
Someday the politicians will think past the next 10,20, or 30 years and focus on the long term future of Seattle. I hope it starts now.
Some people think a public vote will solve everything, which is kind of weird because I voted FOR the monorail three times and all I was left with was a $384 tab renewal in June. Oh yeah, and I sure as hell don't see a monorail anywhere.

We are having a baby!!!
Rachelle and I are pleased to announced we are expecting a new Mitchell in very early March. Rachelle is currently around 11-12 weeks pregnant and besides feeling extra tired and having the occassional headache she is doing wonderful. We are very excited to share this news with all of you!
This picture is Rachelle with our friend Amy in Vegas. Rachelle's doctor called us on the fourth of July as we were about to head to the airport to catch a flight to Vegas. She suggested it might be a good idea to take a pregnancy test and this picture was taken after pregnancy test number two.
Block Party Pics!!!
Yesterday was the first annual 85th and Stone Block Party. We barbequed, drank, and socialized from about 4:00-10:00 PM. Jeff and Rhiannon provided the sound system, Steve and Tricia provided their yard, and Master Chef Daniel (of Mandy and Daniel fame) cooked all evening long.

Willie Ballgame has an Isolated Slugging% (SLG-BA) of .032, thanks to his whopping four extra base hits on the season. Among players with at least 100 plate appearances, WFB?s .032 ISO ranks 374th out of 374, unsurprisingly. But how bad is an ISO of .032?
The average national league pitcher has an ISO of .043. Willie Bloomquist has hit for less power this year than the league average hitting pitcher. Yes, he does some things well enough (mainly, steal bases) to keep a roster spot in the major leagues, but the idea that he?s any kind of major league player who deserves regular playing time is a joke.
And yet he is still in the lineup day after day. Hargrove will be fired at the end of the year, I promise.

This is a must read for book clubs!
I just finished reading London Times reporter Chris Ayres account of witnessing the 911 attacks in New York and his role as an embedded journalist with the US Marines during the first stages of the Iraq War. Oddly enough the book his both horrific and hilarious at the same time. The writer is our age and his views and references will undoubtedly strike a chord with you. Plus, the fact that he is scared shitless the whole time might resonate too.

No compromise?
The Sonics were asking WAY TOO MUCH to help something that was already broke when they bought it (i.e. the Key Arena, the Sonics lease etc.) All I can say is if you can't fix it yourself and you can't buck up more than 20-30 million then you shouldn't own an NBA team. Besides that, why should I really care anyway if I can't afford to go to the games? My season tickets to see the M's cost me $38 a game, my Seahawk tickets were $44, and I can't see a Sonic game in a decent seat for under $100 (I know because my brother in-law took me to a bunch of games and I had sticker shock everytime I sat down in each different location).
My family had season tickets in the 80's and I loved watching the Sonics in the 90's, but Schultz and his inept ownership group have brought nothing to the table. The only decent thing they have done on their own is trade Payton for Allen, otherwise it's been a bunch of crappy basketball and a bunch of bizarre drafts. Currently, we need a defensive stopper and we drafted an immature seven footer even though we have two already.
This ownership group was terrible from the beginnng to the end. How many playoffs series have we won with this group in charge anyway? I was actually hoping they would sell to someone who could move them to Bellevue where there are more people who can afford to go to the games.
On the flip side, why couldn't any sort of compromise be reached? Paul Allen kicked in 100 million for his stadium. Could the CEO of Starbucks not come close to that? Or maybe at least offer a compromise? What about the city and their negotiation tactics, all or nothing? Sorry we can't help? Two idiots on both sides of the table and don't even try to tell me this group WANTS to keep the team in Seattle.

Alia Shawkat (who played the ambiguously-monikered, super-jaded, movie-producing, cousin-kissing teen on the short-lived but much-beloved and altogether over-hyphenated Fox comedy) has the following to say about a possible AD leap to the big screen: "Mitch actually recently told us that there is a good possibility for a movie, and that he's talking to Ron Howard about it."
Well, they did end the show with a movie pitch to series producer/narrator Ron Howard. If they pulled it off, wouldn't that, like, totally be the metaness to end all metanesses? No, that would be an Arrested Development movie about the Arrested Development movie, told from the perspective of the guy who's programming Arrested Development: The Movie: The Videogame. ("Play as GOB. Play as Michael. Play as The Loose Seal.")
In any case, my head will happily explode, and when it does, I promise to YouTube it for your enjoyment.

Vegas Baby, Yeah!!!
Here are some of the highlights from our Vegas trip.
The Pearl Jam show at the MGM rocked. It was mainly a greatest hits set sprinkled with new songs plus Rats and Garden thrown in too. Plus Eddie did some great Elvis poses during Little Sister. They closed with an intense and long version of Porch.
We did TEN poses durin
g pre-funk.
Colfax spilled beer on Rachelle.
Hanging out with Amy was fun.
We watched Desio win seven grand playing Black Jack.
Two lifeguards made out in front of us.
Eddie Vedder dedicated a song to Rachelle.
The MGM bar after the show was a Pearl Jam celebration with dancing and sing-a-longs.

Public Opinion Pole on Sonics and Alaskan Way Viaduct
"Voters were divided on numerous transportation questions, but more than half agreed that the Puget Sound region is losing ground when it comes to dealing with transportation problems.
They named the decaying Alaskan Way Viaduct as the highest priority. Thirty-two percent of respondents preferred that it be replaced with a tunnel, 28 percent chose repairs and 21 percent sided with replacing it altogether. Only 12 percent simply want it torn down."

Another Foul Ball
I caught this one last night at the KC Royals v. Seattle Mariners last night at Safeco Field.
E. Brown hit a pop up that must have went 2oo feet in the air and when it came down I caught it with two hands, just like I was taught.
The drunk guys to my right (see pic) went absolutely crazy and the buzz in the crowd was electric. The couple in front of me asked if I could pinch hit too.
Poll numbers down? Time to bash gays!
Same old story from the Republican party here. Get the churches all riled up about issues that are very low on the list of national priorities righ now.
Shouldn't the President be a bit more concerned about his soldiers killing innocent woman and children in Iraq right now? Shouldn't he be a bit more concerned about this countries nine TRILLION dollar (and rising) debt? Keep in mind the budget was balanced six years ago.
Shouldn't the president be a bit more concerned with inflation and rising fuel costs that affect the middle and lower class so much more than the rich Republicans?
You'd think so, but instead it is time to focus on the gays again.

I saw this on the web today and started laughing out loud. KJR needs some new talent to talk about sports. It's baseball season and there isn't anyone on the station who actually follows the whole sport (minors-majors). Their theories are based on on speculation and not statistics. They plead their case via emotionall response as opposed to using concrete data. Plus, they still don't understand the importance of walking and/or not making outs in general. If Chris Snelling played full time he would walk as much as Giambi, but these hosts want to stick with over the hill Carl Everett and slow left fielder Raul Ibanez.

Free Alice In Chains Show
Seattle rock band Alice in Chains will perform a free "open rehearsal" concert Tuesday night at 7:30 at the Moore Theatre to kick off its summer tour. Free tickets to the event are available beginning tonight at 6 at the Moore box office at 1932 2nd Ave. The limit is two tickets per person. The show is all-ages, but please bring I.D. The band includes members Sean Kinney, Mike Inez and Jerry Cantrell. There's no confirmation as to who the lead singer will be, but William DuVall of Comes With the Fall has filled in for the late Layne Staley in the past and is scheduled to perform during the European leg of the tour.

It's been a while since I have done a blog free-write, so here goes.
I've been enjoying Big Love more than the Sopranos this year. I actually found myself wishing for more of the gay-motorbiker handlebar mustache man side story this week. Oh well.
Last week's The Office contained one of the funniest sequences I have seen on TV in a long time. When they listed all the different ways Jim was torturing Dwight at work I almost fell on Kitty girl after laughing so hard. Moving his desk one inch every time he got up so he ended up at the water cooler? Brilliant. I am going to do that to one of my students who talks too much.
Earlier this year I was in favor of the illegal spying done by the Bush Admin because they said it was only Iraq, Al Queda, and Terrorism related. Of course they lied and now we know differently. I am not even sure why I gave all the DC cronies the benefit of the doubt. And now we find out the Bush team wants Jeb to carry on the insanity? Gimme a break.
Great new albums out right now: Flaming Lips, Drive By Truckers, Goldfrapp, and Wolfmother. I hear the new Grandaddy is really good too (it's their last record).
Mission Impossible III was surprisingly very entertaining. I went based on the good reviews and it reminded my of two episodes of 24 put together. I still think Tom Cruise is nuts and should not be allowed to laugh out loud and smile. It's creepy in a Jacko type way.
My sister is days away from having her baby. Pretty nuts. I am already an uncle to three kids on Rachelle's side, but this obviously hits close to home. I need a drummer and I will buy Dane his first drum set when he turns two.
I recently rediscovered jogging. It has been almost 12 years since I jogged regularly at Central during one of my summers in E-Burg and I forgot what that runner's high felt like. I think it might be kind of like drinking a Long Island Ice Tea on Acid. But that's just a rumor. My goal is to be able to run to Issaquah by this Tuesday.
Anyone seen the Documentary Murderball? A sad and simultaneously uplifting story about wheelchair rugby players. If this movie doesn't hit your heart you must be Dick Cheney (because he doesn't have one of course).
Wilco is on Conan tonight.

Everyday Eddie is Done
Eddie has an 8.38 ERA and four blown saves. His fastball tops out ot 90 MPH on a day with a 45 MPH wind gust blowing behind it. His shoulder is hurt and he has had major control problems all year.
Move Putz to the closer role and keep Soriano and Sherril in the set up roles. Eddy can gain confidence in long relief without pressure. If that doesn't work, time to Bret Boone him.
