I saw this on the web today and started laughing out loud. KJR needs some new talent to talk about sports. It's baseball season and there isn't anyone on the station who actually follows the whole sport (minors-majors). Their theories are based on on speculation and not statistics. They plead their case via emotionall response as opposed to using concrete data. Plus, they still don't understand the importance of walking and/or not making outs in general. If Chris Snelling played full time he would walk as much as Giambi, but these hosts want to stick with over the hill Carl Everett and slow left fielder Raul Ibanez.

Free Alice In Chains Show

Seattle rock band Alice in Chains will perform a free "open rehearsal" concert Tuesday night at 7:30 at the Moore Theatre to kick off its summer tour. Free tickets to the event are available beginning tonight at 6 at the Moore box office at 1932 2nd Ave. The limit is two tickets per person. The show is all-ages, but please bring I.D. The band includes members Sean Kinney, Mike Inez and Jerry Cantrell. There's no confirmation as to who the lead singer will be, but William DuVall of Comes With the Fall has filled in for the late Layne Staley in the past and is scheduled to perform during the European leg of the tour.

It's been a while since I have done a blog free-write, so here goes.

I've been enjoying Big Love more than the Sopranos this year. I actually found myself wishing for more of the gay-motorbiker handlebar mustache man side story this week. Oh well.

Last week's The Office contained one of the funniest sequences I have seen on TV in a long time. When they listed all the different ways Jim was torturing Dwight at work I almost fell on Kitty girl after laughing so hard. Moving his desk one inch every time he got up so he ended up at the water cooler? Brilliant. I am going to do that to one of my students who talks too much.

Earlier this year I was in favor of the illegal spying done by the Bush Admin because they said it was only Iraq, Al Queda, and Terrorism related. Of course they lied and now we know differently. I am not even sure why I gave all the DC cronies the benefit of the doubt. And now we find out the Bush team wants Jeb to carry on the insanity? Gimme a break.

Great new albums out right now: Flaming Lips, Drive By Truckers, Goldfrapp, and Wolfmother. I hear the new Grandaddy is really good too (it's their last record).

Mission Impossible III was surprisingly very entertaining. I went based on the good reviews and it reminded my of two episodes of 24 put together. I still think Tom Cruise is nuts and should not be allowed to laugh out loud and smile. It's creepy in a Jacko type way.

My sister is days away from having her baby. Pretty nuts. I am already an uncle to three kids on Rachelle's side, but this obviously hits close to home. I need a drummer and I will buy Dane his first drum set when he turns two.

I recently rediscovered jogging. It has been almost 12 years since I jogged regularly at Central during one of my summers in E-Burg and I forgot what that runner's high felt like. I think it might be kind of like drinking a Long Island Ice Tea on Acid. But that's just a rumor. My goal is to be able to run to Issaquah by this Tuesday.

Anyone seen the Documentary Murderball? A sad and simultaneously uplifting story about wheelchair rugby players. If this movie doesn't hit your heart you must be Dick Cheney (because he doesn't have one of course).

Everyday Eddie is Done

Eddie has an 8.38 ERA and four blown saves. His fastball tops out ot 90 MPH on a day with a 45 MPH wind gust blowing behind it. His shoulder is hurt and he has had major control problems all year.
Move Putz to the closer role and keep Soriano and Sherril in the set up roles. Eddy can gain confidence in long relief without pressure. If that doesn't work, time to Bret Boone him.

Random Thoughts

Scrubs is really an amazing show. Tuesday's episode reminded me that the writers can bring in the drama when you least expect it and the actors can handle the material with gusto.

The new Flaming Lips record is bizarre as hell and like most of their albums it will take a few listens to digest the whole thing.

I don't like some of the negative campaigning that moveon.org is running. However, are they really just fighting fire? I guess I really just wish it would stop from both sides.

Gas is over $3 a gallon in Seattle which is approximately a 45% increase in the last five months. However, the price of oil per barrel has only risen 18%. You do the math and tell me the oil companies arent' screwing us. And who is in bed with the oil companies? Oh yeah, our current administration.

Why is it I don't care if the Sonics move to Bellevue or Renton?

I have no problem tearing down Memorial Stadium and the Center House to build a full on urban park in Seattle. Memorial Stadium sucks for concerts and the Center House is scary. More green space!

Adrian Beltre had to have been on steroids two years ago. How else do explain his lack of power? The dude hit 48 home runs two years ago! By the way, Putz and Soriano should be the go-to bullpen men.

The reviews for United 93 are fantastic

I am really excited to see this movie this weekend since I have heard it's not explotative and political and instead just "tells the story". Some people have said this movie is arriving too soon, but am interested in the heroics of fellow Americans and I doubt waiting two-three more years would change anything. Let's roll.

I told Rachelle there was a racoon at the door and she thought I said "monkey at the door" and grabbed a banana to feed the monkey. However, the racoon rejected the bananas and ate grapes instead. Racoons are like that.

Terry and Sally messed up. Here's all they had to do:

Show the immunity idol to the whole group.
They should have told everyone that Terry will give the immunity idol to Sally no matter what. He of course has the hidden immunity idol himself. Therefore, it wouldn't matter who they voted for...either way someone other than Terry or Sally would have to go.
Rather than duke it out at tribal council, they should have just decided as a group who needed to go next. Everything would be out in the open.
Most likely they would have chose Aras to go next.
So all eight players go to tribal council and vote Aras out.
You know what?
The immunity idol is never shown because the threat of it coming out scares everyone away.

Bottom line: Sally and Terry are still in the game and Terry still has the immunity idol.

Why didn't they do this?

The Loop

Caught The Loop on Fox tonight because we only get channel 13 at the cabin. I was pretty impressed and I think I will set the DVR for stun. This isn't the same level of comedy as Arrested Development, The Office, or Scrubs (although it tries to be), however, it's pretty much the next best thing. Phillip Baker Hall and Mimi Rogers pretty much steal every scene they are in and the slacker roommates are pretty funny too.

2.5 Stars out of 4 with the potential for more stars.

P.S. I can't believe That 70's Show is still on the air. I remember about five years ago I found it to be mildly ammusing in a Happy Days type of Way. Not it is terribly unfunny just like Happy Days was after Richie Cunningham moved out of Mr. and Mrs. C's house.

Time to Hit Stevens All weekend

Hey , Wake Up ? the Powder Party is not over! This has been an outstanding season with lots of powder days and we are not done yet. Another quality dump is on our doorstep. Some ski areas will be closing after this weekend. Snowpack is above normal by 110-150%..

A beautiful, classic, cool, moist northwesterly flow will develop Friday after the front moves through. This specific weather pattern is uncommon this late in the season. Snow will start to accumulate on Friday and by Friday night snow levels will drop to 1500-2000ft for the entire weekend. All ski areas will get snow, NO rain. Quality will be great. But I favor early in the morning, higher slopes, north facing slopes and groomers. This late in the season, if the sun peaks out for long it will get heavy fast, hence I have some caution. But the forecast looks good and will keep the sun from coming out for the most part. We will see cloudy skies and snow through the entire weekend, therefore I am optimistic. Expect 6-12? Saturday morning, then 2-4? during the day to keep it fresh. Expect another 6-12? for Sunday morning and more during the day Sunday. Both days will be excellent.

The weird part is that I know everyone of these songs and there is no way I could even come close to telling you who is in the top ten today. I still have a tape recording of the announcer in Aberdeen saying my name after I requested the Rockwell song. Bush Approval Rating at New Low

What a shocker, right? He's going to have to come up with a new strategerific plan to get out of this mess.
Is there anyone in his cabinet that isn't completely corrupt? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I have run into more and more people in the last few weeks who have actually denounced their vote for Bush (I of course can't figure out how any sane person could have voted for him anyway, but that is a horse of a different color).

Only a few more months until the American public can vote the Republicans out of the house and Senate. Yippee!

(Hell, if we were really lucky we could vote the Democrats out too and start all over...)

The End of Arrested Development...the Show

When Fox canceled its critically acclaimed sitcom Arrested Development after three seasons of low ratings, the show's loyal fans had reason to hope: The pay cable channel Showtime was considering picking up the series. That glimmer of hope faded on Monday when the show's creator, Mitch Hurwitz, announced that he was ending his involvement with the series, thus virtually guaranteeing that AD would go off into the syndicated limbo of series that shoot fewer than 100 episodes. We caught up with Hurwitz and asked him to explain what drove his decision.

Why did you decide to bow out?
You know I really wrestled with the decision for a long time, and what I discovered was that I love wrestling, and I think I want to go pursue professional wrestling.

But seriously...
In truth, I had taken it as far as I felt I could as a series. I told the story I wanted to tell, and we were getting to a point where I think a lot of the actors were ready to move on. My instinct was that it was over when Fox pulled the plug. I considered continuing the show because I felt I owed that to the fans. But I am determined to give them some other kind of entertainment that will satisfy them at some point, I hope.

Were you worried about disappointing fans who just want more episodes?
I'm more worried about letting down the fans in terms of the quality of the show dropping. For whatever reason, because it's certainly not a large fan base, I've been devoted to delivering what these fans have come to expect. So it's really just the opposite. I know what it's like to love shows and have them go away, and I really feel for them, and I'd be very happy if there was a way for someone else to pick up the slack and deliver the show for them.

Could the show really go on without you?
I'm open to anything that isn't a weekly series commitment that I have to make to producing this, because I've creatively exhausted the story I wanted to tell. I really gave my life to this. I mean, I am not exaggerating when I say that it was seven days a week, and on an average until four or five in the morning. I'm okay with any kind of future for Arrested Development, whether it be a movie or a special now and then ? even a Saturday-morning animated series, like Arrested Development Babies. Wouldn't that be good? I have a feeling the merchandising on Buster alone would be just enormous. Everyone would have a little stuffed Buster. Or a series of Burger King cups, or I could see it working well in the context of a Colorform game.

Is there anything Showtime could have done?
Showtime was great. I really did not want to give [Showtime entertainment president] Robert Greenblatt a lesser version of Arrested Development. There were a lot of advantages of going to Showtime. If I had had that opportunity last year or the year before, I would have jumped at it. I was just convinced the ship had sailed a bit on Arrested.

I did look into whether there was enough financial incentive to say, ''To hell with health, to hell with my family, and to hell with fans' expectations for quality. Is there enough money to let me sell out and do this?'' And I'm happy to say there wasn't. I say that a little tongue-in-cheek.

Was it tough breaking the news to the cast?
I think they knew. And I think we're all really proud of the accomplishment, and we really feel privileged to have gotten the chance to do it. And at least so far, we have all been able to feel very fortunate about it. We never had an expectation that this unusual, dense show that required an audience to really pay attention was going to be a hit show. It was instead a really meaningful creative exercise that we all gave our lives to, and we always knew it was going to be a temporary endeavor.

We all feel that the work we did on the show has put us in this privileged position to be able to attract other work. Even though Arrested Development had a record low viewership, the main demographic appears to have been movie-studio executives, so hopefully the cast will be able to benefit from that.

If the show had stayed on Fox, would you have kept doing it?
I don't think it would have been much different. I think if it had stayed on Fox, there would have been a willingness to let me take more of a background position on the show. It really got a little too onerous to deliver this on a weekly basis. It's hard to say ? maybe there was an element of being discouraged on all of this, particularly on the third season, where we did our most ambitious work and we never had a chance to have it seen or really have it promoted or even aired consecutively. So the cast and the writers and all of us felt discouraged by the experience of the third season, so it may very well have been psychologically detrimental to this whole thing. My honest feeling right now is that it played out creatively. We told the story.

It seems like it's never really over, doesn't it?
It's the determination of the fans and the determination of the critics that has kept this thing alive. It's truly an audience-driven experience. And for me, anyway, if there's a way to continue this in a form that's not weekly episodic series television, I'd be up for it.

What are you up to next?
Well, at first I have to think of a professional wrestling persona. I mean, I can't just go out there as Mitch Hurwitz and take on some guy that calls himself the Exterminator. I need an angle and I need a look. Also, I'm not in great shape.

Other than that, I really don't know. I'm going to take a little time and figure out what the next story I want to tell is ? whether it's in TV or movies or other forms. It's less about the medium and more about the story.

Do you even realize the street value of that much snow?

Stevens was insane today. We arrived at 8:55 and left shortly after 2:15. Our legs were demolished, but our our hearts were filled with ecstasy. Rachelle and I rode up with Erik and then met Jory up at Hogsback for a few stellar runs as well. It was one of those days were there was so much snow that we couldn't decide to go first. Rachelle fell in love with the power line run while I had a great line down the southern part of Southern Cross. Even Hogsback was fat with all the powder awaiting some cliff drops. Damnnn Gina!

It was snowing as we left so I am sure tomorrow will be stellar as well.

Skip Work and Hit the Slopes on Thursday

What an amazing forecast. Thursday is this year's official skip work and head to the mountains day. Rachelle and I will be at Stevens bright and early so meet us there or catch a ride!


Late Tuesday night, snow begins to really dump. Powder Day on Wednesday with 5-12in new Wed AM and snowing through the day. Excellent quality with a 1500ft snow level. Another 4-8? during the day, filling in your tracks. Some wind might be a problem Wednesday. Night skiing will be the best Wednesday night as a convergence zone will focus a lot of snow on the Summit and Stevens.
That CZ will mean possible ATFD (all time favorite day) for Stevens and Alpental on Thursday morning. Not to be denied: Baker, Crystal and White will have untracked and continued snowy conditions on Thursday, with all resorts seeing a 1000ft SL and dry light powder ? favor north slopes. Best quality snow early. Expect another 6-12inches, Thursday morning with more during the day.

UP TO TWO FEET OF SNOW IS LIKELY IN THE CASCADES FROM WEDNESDAY
THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT. SNOW LEVELS NEAR 2500 FEET ON WEDNESDAY WILL FALL TO BELOW 1000 FEET LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT. TRAVEL THROUGH THE PASSES WILL LIKELY BE DIFFICULT DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. IFYOU PLAN TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE CASCADES ANYTIME WEDNESDAY THROUGHTHURSDAY...PLAN EXTRA TIME FOR YOUR TRIP OR CONSIDER MAKINGALTERNATE PLANS.

Ok, so I am hooked and I am in love with Stacy. Rachelle is too, so it's all cool like Fonzi. I can't wait to watch her dance tonight and I sure hope her heel holds out!
Yes, I know it's gross that I actually watch Dancing With the Stars. However, I really feel like the Lacheys have really had a tough time of it lately and anything that Drew can do to raise their spirits is huge. Plus, Nick might only make out with 5 or 10 million from the Jessica divorce and we all know he won't be able to live on that.
Jerry Rice? If you looked anymore stiff I would use you to help fix some bad planks on the deck at the cabin. The afro didn't help, sorry. Perhaps dressing up like Rerun from What's Happening might shake you out of your shell. Or drugs.

New Place

Rachelle and I just put a deposit on a new condo in Belltown. It won't be ready for 13-14 months, but we anticipate a great many days of hanging out by the trees in the new Sculpture Park and making out.

Quick thoughts:
1. There is a reason people don't want you to smoke in front of them...it can kill em. Pretty simple really. People may have a right to smoke, but they don't have a right to kill others in the process. Get over it smokers!
2. Why does anyone care if someone you don't know gets a lap dance in a place they don't even visit? Only adults are allowed in strip clubs, so Seattle isn't protecting today's youth. I don't understand the problem here.
3. I love Rock Posters on power poles. Are power poles so attractive that we need to see every detail or their metal/wood glory? Nope.
4. Greg Nickels should concentrate more on exercising.

Good News for AD continues...

Ironically, the threatened show that's most likely to have a future is Arrested Development, which Fox is sending off with a four-episode blowout on Feb. 10 (opposite the Olympics opener on NBC; thanks a lot, Fox), but which is still in negotiation with ABC and Showtime for a possible pickup. While we cross our fingers for a resurrection of AD, will you be mourning any of these other shows, or are they getting while the getting is good?

Crash

This is a well-written and thought provoking article by Roger Ebert in defense of the movie Crash. He named it his favorite film of the year, however, it was also critcized and ridiculed from some critics as well.
I agree with Roger that the movie does attempt to show all sides of racism which, by the way, should not be just considered a "liberal" topic. Didn't Katrina remind us how far we have to go in this country to get past prejudice, inequality, and inequity?
A movie like Crash is important not only for it's entertainment value (which I felt was exceptional), but for its social impact as well.

I really recommend reading this article.

OK, time to talk movies.
Here is my ratings system:

King Kong in Haiku:
King Kong is Too Long
but damn the action is strong
Watts needs Oscar Nod

I would trim about 30 min off of King Kong, however, it is still without a doubt worth seeing. Get rid of the Brontasaurus chase and the subplot with the young deckhand and his mentor and you are down to about 2:35 or so. The Ape seemed as real as Gollum the Evil One.
Analysis: Matinee with a large screen

Syriana
Did you like Traffic? If so, you will probably like Syriana as it was written by the same gentleman. Most of what takes placed is based on real events and when you leave the theater you will be even more skeptical of the US role in the World Oil business. Everyone talks about George Clooney giving a great performance, but I thought Matt Damon and Jeffrey Wright (also great in Broken Flowers this year) gave wonderfully layered performances as well.

Munich
This is Steven Spielberg's best work in quite some time. However, I feel as if it would have been even better if it was edited down 10-15 minutes too. Length is great when it's needed (right, ladies?) but when you know you are watching filler it's a bit disappointing. That criticism aside, this is a very suspenseful and relevant film. Unlike Syriana, I have thought about the events in Munich almost every day since I have seen the film. No, it's not 100% accurate historically, but it doesn't claim to be either. What resonates is the feeling that the Middle East will be a quagmire until someone finally says "enough with the violence" and encourages diplomacy (possible? Maybe, maybe not). 'An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind simplifies the message a bit', but at the same time it's a close as I can come to describe what I think Spielberg is trying to say.

Rumor Has It you should see this movie. Sometimes Rumors are wrong. Great premise here with very poor execution.
Analysis: DVD rental only if you like romantic comedies that are light on the comedy part.

The Matador
Loved it. A very dark comedy with stong work from both Pierce Brosnon and Greg Kinnear. In fact, this might be the former 007's best work ever.
If you think the following line is funny I can guarantee you will like this movie:
Businessman Greg Kinner to Assassin Pierce Brosnon
Greg: "Are you serious?"
Brosnon "As serious as an erection problem"

Matador Is out In Seattle Now

I hope to catch The Matador this weekend. It could be the sleeper hit of the winter season.

Also, I have been meaning to post reviews/opinions/thoughts on all of the latest releases here on the site. I'll try to do that this weekend.
