I hope to catch The Matador this weekend. It could be the sleeper hit of the winter season.

We went for a nice hike/walk around Lost Lake today. Right as we were leaving on our journey it started snowing really hard. We ran into a nice couple (they weren't hurt luckily) who offered to take our picture. I immediately ask myself, is this my beautiful wife? Where is my beautiful house? Why am I wearing such a large suit?
Greetings music fans. Once again in honor of one of my favorite movies it's time for the 2005 Top Five Albums of the Year. What movie you say? Why High Fidelity of course with John Cusack and Jack Black. Perhaps you have seen it? If not, rent it today.
Anyway, what a great year for the tunes. Real-rock continued to prevail and goatee-metal-date-rape rap has seemed to disappear for good. (In other words, Fred Durts must be crying in agreeance).
On a personal note, I was able to see some fantastic concerts at a few local venues. My Morning Jacket was the stand out show at the Showbox and Wilco was amazing at the Paramount. Also, Pearl Jam dragged us all out to the Gorge and rocked like it was 1993 again. I can only wish I could see all the weeknight shows that come through town, but alas, I am a tired teacher M-F and 11:00 PM starting times just don't work for me.
So I guess it's time for the Top Five. Perhaps you need a little assistance compiling your list? KEXP has a nice drop down list that alphabetically lists this year albums. Browsing through that list and/or looking at your ITunes list organized by the year released might help as well.
My Top Five
1. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-Howl
Out of all the CD's I bought this year, this is the one I listened to the most. I would have never thought BRMC would succeed at doing a bluesy acoustic album filled with slide guitar and harmonica, but it works on every song. I'm listening to Aint No Easy Way as I am typing this and it must be the 50th time I have heard it and I am not even close to sick of it.
2. My Morning Jacket-Z
At first I was shocked to hear people compare this to OK Computer (my favorite non-Beatles album of all time), however after more and more listens I can see the comparison to hold water. The Layers of guitar and reverbed/echoed voice are very similiar.It Beats For You is the Paranoid Android of Z. This record will stay on my IPOD Shuffle for many more months.
3. Band of Bees (also called "Bees")-Free the Bees
I've already said this before, but it's kind of like Beta Band meets up with early the Kinks early Pink Floyd at a psychedelic jam session. The music sounds familiar and yet fresh at the same time.
4. The Go! Team-Thunder, Lighting, Strike
It's hard to explain this to anyone and have it make any sense, but here goes. Pretend your at a club watching a band that has Linus from the Peanuts on piano, a DJ programming beats and samples from 70's cop shows and cartoons, a drummer that specializes in snazzy jazz riffs, the Blues Brothers horn section, and a crew of school yard jump rope girls belting and chanting rhymes. Can you visualize that? Now imagine how it sounds. Still not working for you? All I can say is give it a shot, it's worth your $12.
5. The White Stripes-Get Behind Me Satan
This is their Led Zeppelin III. An album that showcases the piano and acoustic guitar much more so than anything electric. Still, while the album doesn't full on ROCK like their previous three, Jack White is still my hero for writing simple and fascinating songs. "If you think that a kiss is all in the lips, then you've got it all wrong man. And If you think that our dance was all in the hips, oh well, then do the twist."

Best Drama of the year so far. The ending battle last week was more realistic and more intense than anything in Gladiator. I can't wait for season II.

'Lost' deal hatched for mobile
The mysteries of ABC's "Lost" are about to get bigger -- and smaller.
The Emmy-winning hit is spawning a second series for mobile phones in a deal soon to close with a major U.S. carrier, sources said. About 20 episodes -- each several minutes long -- are being shot next month in Hawaii to hit phones sometime early next year.
The project is not being produced by ABC or Touchstone Television but is under the oversight of "Lost" executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.
The Walt Disney Co. declined comment.
The deal is a fresh example of the broadcast networks' rush to embrace portable media -- but this time with original content. Disney might have triggered the trend with its groundbreaking deal to make episodes of "Lost" and other Disney programming available on the new video iPod.
Titled "Lost Video Diaries," the series will introduce two characters said to be stranded alongside the cast featured on the primetime version. As fans of the series know, not all of the dozens of survivors of the fictional plane crash depicted on the series get screen time. While the story lines of the pair will be new to "Lost" viewers, the events depicted in the primetime version will inform their story lines.
A tie-in connecting broadcast and mobile versions also is being considered.
Verizon has emerged as the likeliest partner for Disney in the deal, given the companies' well-established relationship on several fronts. ABC and Verizon Wireless announced a deal in February to showcase repurposed bits of many of the network's programs for VCast, the company's wireless broadband multimedia service. Verizon already stepped up its ties to Disney this week by including ABC Entertainment among the content contributors to its new Mobile Web 2.0 applications, but those assets are not video.
Pricing on the "Lost" spinoff is unclear. Verizon's VCast makes its video content available for $15 per month, and "Diaries" likely will fall into that window. However, VCast also offers premium original content for 99 cents per episode.
Verizon employs Microsoft's Windows Media Center for its video content, which operates at 15 frames per second.
The phone carrier would have exclusive rights to the new mini-"Lost," which eventually could get an iPod window after that exclusivity expires.
"Lost" isn't the first primetime series to migrate to mobile. That distinction belongs to Fox Broadcasting Co.'s "24," which spawned "mobisodes" this year through 20th Century Fox.
Best episode of Lost all year by far.

I think the only thing that is surprising is how long it took the average person to see what 50% of the country feared all along: Bush is incompetent. I say that of course as a moderate without party affiliation (I am and will always be an issues and candidate guy. I wish everyone else was too).

A sad day for fans of intelligent comedy

Okay, we all knew this was coming, especially after only 4 million people tuned in for its one-hour episode on Monday (pitiful!), but now it's official: Fox is cutting back its order on TV's best comedy, Arrested Development, to 13 episodes, instead of a full-season slate of 22, and pulling it during November sweeps. In other words, Arrested is kaput (as is its delightful freshman companion, Kitchen Confidential).
Even though Fox stuck with the series a lot longer than most networks would for a ratings-challenged show, I can't say I'm not crushed. And I know it's a complete longshot, but I'm still going to say a novena in the hopes that ABC or NBC (neither of which exactly have a booming roster of quality sitcoms) might have the good sense to snatch this puppy up.
Either way, it's been a hilarious run, and to honor the wacky Bluth clan, I'm inviting everyone to share their favorite Arrested Development moment. Mine comes courtesy of a throwaway line delivered by Bluth matriarch Lucille (Jessica Walter), who, forced to lower her standards and eat in a family-style restaurant, was asked by a waitress if she wanted, ''Plate or platter?'' Lucille, befuddled and repulsed, replied, ''I do not understand the question, and I won't respond to it.'' Evil. And genius.
Crystal is open (I'll be there Sunday). Baker opens Tueday and Stevens opens Wednesday. What if we actually had a ski season?
Imagine for a moment you are taken back to 1974 and you are in line to see a sold out club show featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, or even Ted Nugent (sans politics). Then imagine, high expectations intact, that the band absolutely blows you out of the water and rocks like nothing you have seen before.
Now imagine it is 2005 and you have been waiting since the demise of Soundgarden, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Screaming Trees for a band to make you want to grab your a beer and scream as loud as possible for more rock. My Morning Jacket is that band.
Simply put, My Morning Jacket is the best live band I have seen in quite some time. It's rare that a band playing live can sound so much better than they do on their albums, especially when their albums are fantastic already. My Morning Jacket did that at the Showbox last night.
My Morning Jacket opened with Wordless Chorus and It Beats For You from their new album "Z". Both songs showcased Jim Jame's reverbed falsetto and at the same time showcased the band's willingness to expand past their alt-country roots. In fact, I would say My Morning Jacket is as close to Wilco and Radiohead live as they are to Lynryd Skynyrd. Keyboards flowed throughout the night along with a occassional processed drum beats that reminded me of both bands. Processed drum beats? Yes, but nothing that took away from the sounds of the dueling guitar jams.
Their new album is a more straight-forward and song oriented than their previous two releases which focused more on alt-country and southern style jam-rock. However, these new songs live sound just as rocking as the earlier material. Particulary impressive were What a Wonderful Man ,Off the Record, and Gideon. All three sounded as if they had been part of the setlist for years.
One Big Holiday and Golden from "It Still Moves" were also big crown favorites. However, nothing prepared me for the onslaught that was Run-Thru. Run-Thru was extended about three or four extra minutes and the mid song bass line had the crowd boogying down in unison (and I mean literally boogying as in the "Shake Your Tailfeather/Ray Charles/Blues Brothers kind of way). When the song ended everyone thrust their $4 beers into the air and screamed in appreciation. Even the three sorority chicks behind us who thought that "rock concert" really meant "time to chat about useless shit" were highly impressed. Jim told the crowd that My Morning Jacket were going to "tenderize us" and indeed they did. (I know that sounds really cheesy, but what the hell? How often do I get a chance to glorify such a fantastic show)
Obviously I had a great time at the show, but the coolest thing was seeing Rachelle's jaw drop after Jim James did a two or three minute guitar solo literally in the crowd. She just kind of looked at me like "are you kidding me, is this for real?". Yes, they were that good.
I have seen every episode so far and I think it will stick around. As someone who occassionally indulges in viewing the very shows Colbert is satirizing, I can easily say he has hit the mark. However, I think it's an uncomfortable half hour much like the oringal Office was and Curb Your Enthusiasm still is. The humor is cringe inducing but nonetheless funny. Your thoughts America?

RP: Well, it had to be sent to me, hysterically, for my approval afterwards. It's like that TV ad. It works.
PB: So you don't mind it?RP: I don't care. No, because it works. The riff is great. It's Jimmy's riff. It put Jimmy in a different place, which is exactly what I do with Strange Sensation [his touring band]. I think it's what music is all about. So much energy and creatively over the years and I don't give a hoot which way it works, so long as when it's working we all know what the game is. And if people sample stuff, that's fine, provided that they own up.
Tomorrow night (Friday the 30th) Dan Wilson is going to catch Jamie Moyer during the first inning of the game. He is retiring at the end of the season and this will be his farewell game.
So, if you are a Dan Fan (how can you not be?) then you'll want to watch and see the ovation that the fans give him. It should be fun to see.
One of my heroes as a journalist and film maker. His Vanilla Sky soundtrack was more or less stolen from my ITunes and he LOVES the Power and the Glory that is Led Zeppelin.

Sometimes it?s all you need. No fancy light show. No video screens. No elaborate stage design. No circus midgets. Sometimes, just sometimes, the music is enough.
Pearl Jam proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt last night at the MTS Centre in front of 16,000 screaming fans and you?d be hard pressed to find a single complaint from anyone there.
Armed with only their instruments and some bare bones lighting, the pioneers of grunge showed why they are one of the only surviving bands from the infamous ?Seattle scene.? With no new album since 2002?s Riot Act and not a lot of promotion leading up to the concert, Pearl Jam played to a record (and deafening) crowd at the arena and proved that like a fine wine, they only get better with age.
Even before they took the stage and started playing the opening notes of Betterman, the energy in the arena was overwhelming. They ploughed through almost three hours of material that ranged from set-list rarities such as Sad, In My Tree and In Hiding to grunge anthems Jeremy, Alive and Black. They took old classics like EvenFlow and Daughter and turned them into eight-minute jam sessions and improvs (during Daughter a fan?s cell phone made it onto the stage and lead singer Eddie Vedder led the crowd with a sing-a-long into the phone that may go down in history as the greatest voice mail ever to be received). They took a song like Do The Evolution and used it to turn the entire MTS Centre into a giant pogo-ball. They took all the energy that Winnipeg could muster and gave it right back to us. And yet the crowd just wouldn?t stop giving.
?We have to say that this is without a doubt the loudest crowd,? said Vedder when he finally addressed the crowd after ripping through the first five songs. ?The pre-show crowd, it was insane out here, we didn?t know what the f*ck was going on, and all we could think was, we hope they?re pacing themselves.?
And pace ourselves we did.
For almost three hours fans were taken on a roller coaster ride of music and emotion. From the 58-second intense rocker Lukin to the beautifully haunting Indifference to the arm raising Given To Fly, fans couldn?t help but sing and cheer. For years Winnipegger?s have seen all the impostors come and go. Nickleback, Creed, Default, Lifehouse. Each one trying to imitate Vedder?s booming baritone. But last night, Vedder showed why he can?t be duplicated. It?s not just about his arena filling voice or his trademark wails, it?s about the emotion and honesty that he puts behind every word and action that he does. From his gut wrenching screams during Blood that evoke all the pain of being ripped apart from the inside, to the sincere heart-breaking whisper of, ?we didn?t belong?we didn?t belong together,? at the end of Black, Vedder shows that music means more when you mean it yourself.
But this wasn?t just the Eddie Vedder show. The rest of Pearl Jam played like it was 1992 all over again. Guitarist Mike McCready was by far the most animated of the group. Between his giant jumping windmills or smiling and interacting with the fans by simply pointing and nodding, McCready played with all the appreciation and energy of someone performing in front of an audience for the very first time. Bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard kept pace with McCready while drummer Matt Cameron proved why he is arguably one of the best drummers alive today. The group has also added keyboardist Boom Gasper to their touring line-up and watching the give-and-take that he and McCready did during the extended Crazy Mary solo was nothing short of musical magic.
And just in case the near three-hour, two encore, 29-song show wasn?t enough, the boys from Seattle decided to end the evening with two songs from ?Uncle Neil? (Neil Young) to the rabid delight of hometown fans. And as the first notes started to play on the evening?s final song, Rockin in the Free World, the house lights were completely up and the sight within the arena was absolutely spectacular. All 16,000 people still going strong, still standing, still clapping and still singing loud enough to almost drown out the music.
?Winnipeg, I?m gonna say this and I mean it,? said Vedder smiling and looking all around the arena in awe, ?you?ve been absolutely f*cking amazing!! Absolutely?f*cking?amazing!!!! ?
The thing is, you?d be hard pressed to find anyone there who wouldn?t say the same thing about them.
Just goes to show, sometimes, just sometimes, the music is enough.
No fancy lighting, elaborate stages, fancy video projectors.
Just the music.
I heard it was good. My idiotic Comcast DVR recorded the recap show.

"Arrested Development" premieres at 8 p.m. Monday, KCPQ/13.
The Bluth family's modest but faithful audience will be happy that the show has been picked up for a full 22-episode third season. That same group also may remember it had a full pickup last season, which was unceremoniously cut to 18, and that "Arrested" does not appear on the January schedule.
Series creator Mitch Hurwitz, genius, remains optimistic. "Schedules are often in flux, so what ends up happening is a lot of the stuff they unveil at the start of the year doesn't stick around." While that could include his comedy -- "The choice is always theirs. They always have the option of cutting it back" -- he's confidant "Arrested" is marked to slide into a slot left open by one of fall's dead leaves. (Keep an eye on that "Head Cases" time slot, kids!)
On to happier news. As the family seeks out a mole, Michael is going to start dating a British woman with a secret. "Part of the fun for the audience is the surprise of the show," he said. "We're not really big into mystery for the sake of mystery, but definitely for the sake of laughs. We knew Buster was going to lose his hand all last year." This year's game of Comedy Clue is no different, so let's hope the network doesn't ruin it in the promos.
Elsewhere at Fox: Calm down, I'm begging you -- "24" has not been canceled. It returns midseason.
This guy was on the Daily Show last night and was extremely knowledgable and well-spoken. It's weird some people are still debating issues that 99.9% of scientists agree on.
To All My Fellow Americans Who Voted for George W. Bush:
On this, the fourth anniversary of 9/11, I'm just curious, how does it feel? How does it feel to know that the man you elected to lead us after we were attacked went ahead and put a guy in charge of FEMA whose main qualification was that he ran horse shows? That's right. Horse shows.
I really want to know -- and I ask you this in all sincerity and with all due respect -- how do you feel about the utter contempt Mr. Bush has shown for your safety? C'mon, give me just a moment of honesty. Don't start ranting on about how this disaster in New Orleans was the fault of one of the poorest cities in America. Put aside your hatred of Democrats and liberals and anyone with the last name of Clinton. Just look me in the eye and tell me our President did the right thing after 9/11 by naming a horse show runner as the top man to protect us in case of an emergency or catastrophe.
I want you to put aside your self-affixed label of Republican/conservative/born-again/capitalist/ditto-head/right-winger and just talk to me as an American, on the common ground we both call America. Are we safer now than before 9/11? When you learn that behind the horse show runner, the #2 and #3 men in charge of emergency preparedness have zero experience in emergency preparedness, do you think we are safer?
When you look at Michael Chertoff, the head of Homeland Security, a man with little experience in national security, do you feel secure? When men who never served in the military and have never seen young men die in battle send our young people off to war, do you think they know how to conduct a war? Do they know what it means to have your legs blown off for a threat that was never there? Do you really believe that turning over important government services to private corporations has resulted in better services for the people?
Why do you hate our federal government so much? You have voted for politicians for the past 25 years whose main goal has been to de-fund the federal government. Do you think that cutting federal programs like FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers has been good or bad for America? GOOD OR BAD? With the nation's debt at an all-time high, do you think tax cuts for the rich are still a good idea? Will you give yours back so hundreds of thousands of homeless in New Orleans can have a home?
Do you believe in Jesus? Really? Didn't he say that we would be judged by how we treat the least among us? Hurricane Katrina came in and blew off the facade that we were a nation with liberty and justice for all. The wind howled and the water rose and what was revealed was that the poor in America shall be left to suffer and die while the President of the United States fiddles and tells them to eat cake. That's not a joke. The day the hurricane hit and the levees broke, Mr. Bush, John McCain and their rich pals were stuffing themselves with cake. A full day after the levees broke (the same levees whose repair funding he had cut), Mr. Bush was playing a guitar some country singer gave him. All this while New Orleans sank under water.
It would take ANOTHER day before the President would do a flyover in his jumbo jet, peeking out the widow at the misery 2500 feet below him as he flew back to his second home in DC. It would then be TWO MORE DAYS before a trickle of federal aid and troops would arrive. This was no seven minutes in a sitting trance while children read "My Pet Goat" to him. This was FOUR DAYS of doing nothing other than saying "Brownie (FEMA director Michael Brown), you're doing a heck of a job!"
My Republican friends, does it bother you that we are the laughing stock of the world? And on this sacred day of remembrance, do you think we honor or shame those who died on 9/11/01? If we learned nothing and find ourselves today every bit as vulnerable and unprepared as we were on that bright sunny morning, then did the 3,000 die in vain? Our vulnerability is not just about dealing with terrorists or natural disasters. We are vulnerable and unsafe because we allow one in eight Americans to live in horrible poverty. We accept an education system where one in six children never graduate and most of those who do can't string a coherent sentence together. The middle class can't pay the mortgage or the hospital bills and 45 million have no health coverage whatsoever.
Are we safe? Do you really feel safe? You can only move so far out and build so many gated communities before the fruit of what you've sown will be crashing through your walls and demanding retribution. Do you really want to wait until that happens? Or is it your hope that if they are left alone long enough to soil themselves and shoot themselves and drown in the filth that fills the street that maybe the problem will somehow go away? I know you know better. You gave the country and the world a man who wasn't up for the job and all he does is hire people who aren't up for the job. You did this to us, to the world, to the people of New Orleans. Please fix it. Bush is yours. And you know, for our peace and safety and security, this has to be fixed.
What do you propose? I have an idea, and it isn't a horse show.

The new Death Cab record comes out tomorrow. It's hard to believe I have been listening to the them for seven years and now they are on a major label. What to make of it all? Will they stay the same? Will they "sell out"? Does anyone care if they sell out? I guess this is what R.E.M. fans went through about 17-18 years ago.
Other notes:
The new BRMC is out. A very mellow record from what I have sampled. I will purchase tomorrow.
The new New Pornographers record came out last week and has been receiving amazing reviews. I will also purchase tomorrow.

Apple has sent out invitations via email to selected media outlets announcing a special event on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 to be held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
The email features the line, "1,000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again."
Apple introduced the iPod on October 23, 2001, describing the device as "a breakthrough MP3 music player that packs up to 1,000 CD-quality songs into an ultra-portable, 6.5 ounce design that fits in your pocket."

I love how the Dominican gets so much press in this one. Oh yeah, and I can't wait to go back. Last night after the race I was telling Grant (money bags!!!) to make sure and put some cash aside for a place at The Compound a.ka.a Casa del Smitt.
Rachelle and I had to listen to the race in the car because we got stuck at the border and then on I-5 in Everett on our way back from an amzing weekend in Vancouver. It was the most exciting two minutes I have ever spent stuck in traffic and I think the neighboring motorists must have thought we were nuts when we freaked out in the car.
It's amazing that Grant has come so far in such little time. I remember him writing the now infamous letter on the hammock in the D.R. over the course of a couple of days. He was so focused and so serious about his intentions. I on the other hand was more concerned about when the next swell would hit the coast and at what time I would drink my next Presidente. Actually, Grant was also concerned about his next Cerveza as well. Usually the first was at about 11:15 am. But I digress.
Anyway, we are so proud of our buddy and getting there to see him win the last race yesterday was a privilege. Walking with Grant to the back stretch and stable area was like walking with a President or Pope. Everyone, and I mean everyone wanted to shake his hand and congratulate him. Even people he didn't know wanted a piece of him.
Over the past few years I kept telling Grant "If you could win the Mile, that would be like the coolest thing of all time". I just didn't realize it would happen so quickly. What's next, the Derby?
Side note: We are still going to buy the official Cabin Fever horse at some point. If any of you are still interested, please let me know.
And who doesn't love Rachel McAdams, huh? The Notebook anyone? The Wedding Crashers?
So how enjoyable was last night's M's game? Only the most fun I have had all year. Felix is insane.
If I have this figured out correctly Felix will pitchFriday the 26th against the White Sox and Wednesday night the 31st against the Yankees.
I am hoping to go to both games and grab decent seats.

I have seen Franz twice and both times they tore the place apart with their strobe rock. Their Showbox show last year was one of the best shows I have seen. Ever. It was Dance Fever all over the place.

First of all, the end of Six Feet Under is very intense and tough to watch due to the complicated emotions every single character is going through after Nate's death. However, the show is still hypnotic and I find myself watching through covered eyes from time to time.
Secondly, The Arcade Fire song that finished the show is one of the bands best songs and deserves to be downloaded from ITunes. I love how mellow it is until it builds up to the group chorus. Uplifting and sad simultaneously.
