Survivor Banter

Dead Woman Walking, or Ddub for short, is the nickname of my survivor, who I am shocked to say is still alive. Sad to see Kobe go...I actually thought he brought some good drama.

Is anyone watching this show? I am not necessarily dedicated to it, but shouldn't someone who has Stephanie, or Tom, or the Dances with Dolphins guy be talking trash to everyone?

We did bet on this didn't we? Who wants to take me for $5 that Janu outlasts their survivor. I will take all bets posted on this blog site. Bring it!

This is something for the ladies

Lost

More discussion of the radio transmission (what was really said and who said it)

Further reading on the ABC discussion board indicates that the "clarified" radio transmission was added on April 1, so it may be nothing more than a decoy. Though the audio heard on that sample clearly says "We are..." it is not the same audio that aired and which CC cleary indicated as "There were no..." It was deliberatley made obscure by the show's creators to engender exactly this type of discussion.

Random Thoughts

Random thought for today:

The new Beck album, Guero, is his most fun album since Odelay. It sounds very similar to that album and Mellow Gold with a touch of One Foot in the Grave's randomness. The Dust Brothers are producing Beck again and the result is a very cool "put this in at a party" type album. Anyway, if you like Beck at all, you will LOVE this. 100%.

24: They frickin blew up Air Force One!!! This show has balls.

The Office
Dwight:"Now who here has an inverted penis"
woman worker: "I have an inverted Vagina"

Dwight:"Who has anal fizzures... that's not a real disease?"
Stocky worker:"Some people have it (looks at camera embarressed)"

I am really digging the Kaiser Chiefs, new Doves, and Bloc Party records in addition to the Beck album. There is some really good stuff out there now that doesn't look or sound like Green Day rip-offs. I would rather hear Clash rip-offs anytime anyway. Oh wait, Green Day ripped off the Clash too. Why do I like Green Day (some punk posers) and hate all the people who want to look and sound like Green Day? It's all the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Joy Division, and the Clash anyway.

Anyone seen The Great Escape? It's a 1963 movie about an escape from a POW prison camp in Poland during World War II. It has James Garner, James Coburn, and the magnificent Steve McQueen. The motorcycle chase at the end of the movie is one of the most exhilerating pieces of cinema of all time and worth the price of the DVD alone. If you get a chance to rent it from Netflix I think you will really dig it.

I went to the M's game last night with The Peach. Seeing Beltre and Sesson up close was quite a treat. Seeing Matt Thornton pitch was the opposite of a treat. It was more like someone taking away a treat. At this point I am hoping we are within striking distance at the All-Star break, but who knows, we might surprise a few people if our pitching reverts to 2001-2003 form. That's a big if.

Rachelle and I took in The Upside of Anger on Friday. It stars Joan Allen and Kevin Costner in his funniest performance since Tin Cup. We really liked it, but I think I would recommend it as a matinee or DVD rental because it is a tad slow at times.

Lost is on tonight. Can't wait. Keep an ear open for all of those numbers. They must mean something!

Bloc Party is on Letterman tonight.

Lost, 24, The Office etc.

The footballs were located on aisle 8 and 15.

Boone found Heroin and Charlie is a junkie.

"There were no survivors of Oceanic flight eight-one-five." The voice on the other end of the radio transmission.

The Diversity training on the Office was hilarious by the way. I think the show will be around for the long haul.

24: This is the best since season 1. Non-Stop Jack Bauer Power Hour.

P.S. A few other people think the voice on the other end of the radio transmission says "WE ARE the Survivors...". I'll have to re-watch.

The Contender

Help!!!

So weeks ago I began Tivoing the Contender and got the first 2 episodes before they moved to Sunday night and conflicted with Arrested Development. Not knowing the errors of my ways I let a few weeks go by until I actually had the time to weed through my Tivo. OH MY GOD it is SO GOOD and I am HOOKED! I cried through both episodes and am dying to know what has been happening and please tell me it isn't Manfreddo who committed suicide. Does anyone have the other episodes? Or should I just wait until the DVD comes out? I don't know what to do! I HAVE to see the Ishe/Ahmed match up. Ahmed is such a MORON and Ishe is a pussy for letting his team down to begin with after all his trash talk. See how far behind I am???

The Office 2

I watched the Office and it's not even close to the original. However, the original creator and star of the British version Ricky Gervais has said a few times that the AMerican version gets better as it goes along.
We'll see.
Some funny stuff...but not enough.

The Office on NBC

The British version of The Office is one of my favorite TV shows of all-time. Most remakes don't come close to the original, but I have read three or four articles that suggests this at least comes somewhat close. If that is the case, it should be great.
Warning: it's character humor and the pace is very off-beat.

Well, I can reclaim the rights to it if I want to. However, I won't have a spot for it until I move to a larger unit. Would you like to have it for three or four years? The only thing is I need to know ASAP or it will fall into the dark side.

The Wire

HBO RENEWS THE WIRE, ACCLAIMED DRAMA SERIES FROM DAVID SIMON, WITH FOURTH SEASON TO AIR IN 2006

LOS ANGELES, March 17, 2005 - The critically acclaimed, Peabody Award-winning HBO drama series THE WIRE has been renewed for a fourth season, it was announced today by Carolyn Strauss, president, HBO Entertainment. The 12-episode fourth season will begin shooting in late 2005, with debut set for 2006.

"THE WIRE just keeps getting better, so we're delighted that David Simon and his team will be returning for another provocative season," said Strauss. "We share the critics' enthusiasm for this unique and challenging series, and eagerly await the new episodes."

Created by David Simon, THE WIRE wrapped its third season last December. The first season looked at the national drug war through the microcosm of a West Baltimore housing project, and the second season focused on a longshoremen's union and its struggle to survive. In its third season, the drama developed its portrait of a fictional Baltimore by exploring the place of the political leadership in addressing a city's problems.

With the Barksdale investigation concluded, the fourth season of THE WIRE will expand its focus to include a look at the role of the educational system in an urban environment.

The third season of THE WIRE generated wide critical praise. It was named the best series of 2004 by Entertainment Weekly, which called the show "the smartest, deepest and most resonant drama on TV." The New York Times observed that the series is "one of the smartest, most ambitious shows on television." TV Guide hailed THE WIRE as "smart and subtle, yet also brutally powerful," while New York Newsday declared THE WIRE "the greatest dramatic series ever produced for television," and Daily Variety called it "brilliant" and "meticulously written, superbly acted."

Rave about FX channel

Anybody here watch The Shield?
That show is SO damn good. I'm excited it's back on. Glenn Close is going to be a huge addition to the cast. Don't worry if you missed the first three seasons, I think they are going for a larger audience, so you'll be ok if you start now. It's on Tuesdays at 10PM. They'll replay last night's episode a few times this week probably. Check it out, let me know what you think.

How good is the programming on FX?
They can get away with so much more than regular network TV. They have three great shows in: The Shield, nip/tuck, and Rescue Me. I just saw previews for another new FX Original Show that comes out this summer called Over There. It's about Iraq and it looks pretty damn good too.

The Contender

With the exception of Survivor (and that's only because betting is involved), I'm not a big reality TV fan. Now there is something for me. I just saw The Contender, and if you like boxing, you will like this show. I know, boxing sucks nowadays, but this show could help. The first episode had the last 30 minutes featuring a 5 round fight between a scrappy underdog who calls out, and chooses to fight a 21-0 ranked opponent. It was a better fight then you might imagine.

Also, for those morbid individuals (and I just found this out looking for the website), one of the boxers killed himself last month during the taping of the show. I have no idea why, but you do get a good idea of the type of pressure these athletes put on themselves when you see this show, as many times, success leads to bigger things in life, and failure leads to a life without boxing (and that's all these guys know how to do). Side note - it's also hilarious watching Sly interact with anyone. I think he thinks the Rocky fights weren't fixed.

Hunter S Thompson

Now, if you want to say that Hunter was more about the hype then the substance, I won't fight you about it. So many people expect to read his work and be overwhelmed by his creative writing style, but that is not what he was all about. In my opinion, he was more about being whatever he wanted to be as opposed to what he should be to make our society better. He could have written novel after novel about the injustices in the world, but instead he decided to write about things that the majority of the US society was living. Instead of creating a tale of good vs evil, nature vs nurture he decided to touch on real people vs zombies (people acting like real people). He seemed to write the first thing that popped into his head, especially when he was fucked up. To me, that is true skill, to make you feel like you are on a journey with someone who has not a single rational thought, and still when you are done reading, you feel like your life has been changed.
A great book by HST was The Curse of Lono. Check it out...

Random Thoughts

Tried to get an IPOD Shuffle today. All the Apple stores are sold out and don't expect more til next week.

WSU handled the ball worse today than any college team I have seen in a long time.

Watching Adam Morrison this year eight or nine times has been an absolute pleasure. Just seeing that follow through makes me want to go practice my shot.

I am finally on Bright Eyes bandwagon. Conor Oberst is simply an amazingly accomplished lyricist for a 24 year old. The Wide Awake albumis like Dylan strumming Lou Reed lyrics. I realize that seems insane to say, but it really is remarkable.

The Brazilian Girls CD is the best party-vibe CD to come out in a long time. A little electronica-reggae combo that makes me want to boogie and/or chill and do some things I can't print here.

Heard of the Ruby Doe? They just went out on a West Coast tour and tonight opened for Mudhoney. They are in the NW top 20 and enjoy a featured spot on the Morning Alternative CD (great disc by the way). It's like Fugazi meets early Soundgarden. Very intense with no apologies.
By the way, they were called IODINE when they headlined Boobi's Bash 94 at Jeremy's parent's house. Items were destroyed. It was chaos. South Cove had never rocked that hard before that night and hasn't since.

Really enjoyed the Dylan tune on Verm's playlist. Great way to end a very accomplished playlist. Good Greenlake running music.

Cant' wait for the M's. Beltre!!!!!

Can't wait to watch the tourney at Jeremy's bachelor party.

Sounds like quite a few people will be at the HAD CD release party. Awesome. It's always great to support the house band. Forster is flying in from Arkansas.

Plan on making a night of it on March 5th. Word

I will be in Vegas starting Wednesday. It will be my first public attempt to count cards. Wish me luck!

The OC v. 90210

Awesome article for fans of both shows. I of course prefer the OC in terms of music and humor, however, 90210 did have a much larger cultural impact. Brandon is the reason I grew sideburns when I was 16 and 17. There, I admitted it.

Thoughts

Hey just thought I would pass a few things on.
First of all, I tried to cancel TIVO today because I want to record in HD and I now have the Comcast Box (the Comcast version is a very basic TIVO really...I miss the real thing big time)and they lowered my monthly bill to $6.95 instead of $12.95. I still doubt I will keep TIVO as I have already had three offers from Craig's list to buy it from me. Perhaps you might call TIVO and say the same thing and lower your own bill.

Secondly, I know everybody is already making plans for the summer and I just wanted to let you know that as soon as Rachelle finds out her schedule for July/August we will let you know about the Cabin Fever. Most likely it will be at the end of July or the first weekend of August at the latest. We should know more in a month or so.

Pretty disappointing hoops day today. The Huskies looked like ass the whole game and the Sonics were doing OK until they decided to take the ten worst shots of the year at the end of the game tonight. Get the ball inside for #$*% sake!!!

Oh well.
Enjoy Sunday night TV. Jason Bateman was pretty funny on SNL last night and tonight's AD looks good too.

Emphysema

Just a little FYI about what killed Johnny. I remember watching shows as a kid and seeing everyone smoke on the air. Can you imagine that now?

Johnny has passed away

When I was two years old I snuck out of my room late one night. My parents went in to check on me and they were very worried because I was nowhere to be found. Then they heard some giggling and went into the living room and discovered me propped up in front of the TV laughing and watching the Tonight Show.
I don't remember this of course, but that is how it was told to me. I loved the Tonight Show and distinctly remember how sas I was when Johnny retired in 1992. That was a crazy night for reasons that I can't print here.
Anyway, it's nice we have the Best Of DVD's to watch and re-watch.
Have fun golfing Johnny.

Million Dollar Baby

In my quest to see all the films nominated in the major oscar categories this year I saw Million Dollar Baby Friday night. It immediately became my favorite film from last year for many reasons. However, I don't want to reveal much except to say it's not just a boxing movie; although there are some great boxing scenes.
It's funny, touching, and emotional without being overly sentimental. I would love to talk about with anyone who gets a chance to see it.
Next up: The Aviator.

P.S. In Good Company was pretty good too.

TIVO Challengers

So from what I understand the Comcast box is not as good as TIVO. However, it is FREE up front and it converts and can record High-Definition TV (we all will have HD within three years I am told). Here's to hoping TIVO lowers their box price and monthly service charge. Otherwise, if I purchase a HD TV in the future that needs the signal converted why would I keep using TIVO? Interesting dilemma...

iPod integration in cars to flourish in 2005

This is great news (since I have a Nissan)

Apple today announced it has struck deals with Mercedes-Benz USA, Volvo, Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari to deliver iPod integration with their car stereo systems in 2005. The iPod Integration Kit for Mercedes-Benz will debut this April in the US with the newly redesigned 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and Volvo will offer two iPod connectivity options for their entire 2005 US model line. Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari will announce details of their iPod integration solutions later this year. These companies join BMW and MINI Cooper who began providing integrated iPod solutions last year

"Uuge" day for Apple

Today Apple announced the long rumored flash based iPod. It is called the "iPod shuffle"
It is smaller than a pack of gum and can store 240 songs and costs $149. Read more here.

Apple also announced a new low priced Mac computer aimed at PC users with iPods who have thought about "switching" to a Mac. It is called the "Mac mini". It is only 6" by 6" by 2" and it starts at $499. Read more here.

(They also announced that they have now sold more than 10 million iPods. They sold 500% more iPods in the 4th quarter of 2004 than they did in Q4 of 2003)

Modest Mouse on the OC

They rocked. Now I know the world has ended.
Anyone see the Black Keys on Letterman last night? Also, rockin.

Please ignore my previous post about the high school show. I got caught up in the moment and it probably sucks.

The Music

Just saw on the End's website that The Music has a song in the top ten. Better late than never. The new album is pretty good, but there are a couple of songs that dive into Candlebox territory unfortunately. The hard stuff is as good as the last record though.

Life as we know it

Okay this post will seem pretty dorky, but I came home from the gym and hopped online to check the Dawg score (no TV tonight) and I flipped on my TV downstairs to watch the Zags and I come across Life As We Know It. I know most of you watch Joey (sorry, still think it sucks. It's like comfort food TV) and I TIVO the OC for Rachelle and I...anyway...
It's a show about high school kids and it is set in Seattle. They refrenced Snow Patrol, talked IPODS, and Kelly Osborn is in it as well as the dwarf/midget athor-guy from Elf. Talk about guilty pleasure TV. I kind of got into it. Maybe because they get high school pretty close compared to most teen-soaps.
Is there anyone else out there who has seen this show or would own up to checking it out?
I will whimper away now...

Lost Idea

I can't believe I never thought of this. It is pretty interesting to ponder...

"I think we are missing the obvious about where the polar bear came from. Couldn't it have been in the cargo hold of the plane, being shipped from one zoo to another? If it works for Vincent (the dog), it works for the polar bear. Boring solution, I know, but likely."

Nokia commercial ripped off PJ?

I just saw a commercial on tv for a new nokia phone that either purchased Pearl Jam's Yellow Ledbetter or ripped it off. The commercial is simple and only has a guitar playing, it's not exactly the same but it was enough to turn my head from my computer because I thought Pearl Jam was on. I was kind of upset b/c I thought Pearl Jam joined the Who and Zepplin in selling songs for commerials. This must be a rip off or VERY VERY SIMILAR. Let me know if you see this commercial. It was on at the end of the Orange Bowl.

TiVoToGo

I'm not so sure that this is as cool as I once thought it sounded. But nonetheless, TiVoToGo is finally here:

CES 2005: TiVo Takes Its DVR Service Mobile
by Paul Thurrott (WinInfo Daily UPDATE)

Following in the footsteps of Microsoft's Media Center software, which first offered this functionality more than 2 years ago, digital video recording (DVR) pioneer TiVo this week announced that it will augment its service with the ability to copy certain recorded TV shows to PC notebook computers. The feature, which lets subscribers access their recorded TV shows away from home, has been a long time coming. TiVo first announced its TiVoToGo service a year ago at the ConsumerElectronics Show (CES) 2004.
"Consumers don't want to be tied to their living room to watch their favorite entertainment," TiVo Chief Marketing Officer Matt Wisk said. "With TiVoToGo, subscribers can take their favorite shows with them to enjoy on business trips or family vacations." Unlike a similar feature that Microsoft first introduced with Windows XP Media Center Edition (XP MCE) in October 2002, TiVo's recorded TV shows are heavily protected and require special software before users can access them on notebook computers. And unlike Media Center, TiVo subscribers must enter a username and password to access their recorded content.
TiVo defended the security requirements, noting that they mollifyHollywood companies that are concerned about piracy. But the service is limited in other ways. TV programming such as Pay Per View movies, On Demand content, and everything on HBO and Cinemax services can't be copied to portable devices. And TiVoToGo isn't available to DirecTiVo customers, who use the DirecTV satellite system. Those customers represent nearly half of TiVo's installed base.
One benefit of TiVo and TiVoToGo is cost. Although the TiVo service typically costs subscribers $12.95 a month, TiVo devices cost as little as $99, which is a far cry from the $1000 or more that a typical Media Center PC costs.
